What's Going Around?

Summer Fun

It's the summer and although it is fun, there are certain precautions that everyone should take.

Swimming safety

Everyone should swim with someone watching, a parent or lifeguard. Being a good swimmer doesn't prevent drowning. For more information see swimming safety.

Everyone should wear SUN BLOCK (not sunscreen). It should protect against both UVa and UVb. It should be a 30-50. Levels higher than that, do not improve protection. You should reapply it every 1-2 hours. You can also wear clothing to protect against the sun. There are SPF brands that may protect even better.

Bug can carry multiple diseases. The best thing to do is prevent bites. This can be done by using an of the following:
  • DEET preferred (30%) can spray on skin or clothing
  • Picaridin up to 10%
  • IR3535
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products recommended over 3 yrs of age.
Products should be applied to clothing and exposed skin. Spray outside. Wash skin with soap and water when children come in. Wash clothes prior to wearing again.

If you are bitten treatment is supportive. You should apply 1% Hydrocortisone cream to the area 3 times a day. You can also use oral benadryl.

For more information see CDC Bug Repellent.
